About Kevin

Kevin's Story
Kevin’s story begins as it ended, with a rare blood disease. Kevin was diagnosed at birth with Diamond Blackfan Anemia, a rare blood disorder characterized by the inability of the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. For treatment, Kevin underwent blood transfusion therapy, heading into Boston every three weeks to spend a lengthy day at the hospital. While a lengthy 5-8 hour blood transfusion is never enjoyable, Kevin made the best of it by watching movies, joking with the nurses and doctors, and befriending other patients.

A critical complication of chronic blood transfusions is an increased level of iron in the blood. This is treated through chelation therapy which is the use of medication to remove excess iron and other metals from the body. When he was younger, Kevin used Desferal to reduce his iron levels. For years, Kevin slept with a needle under his skin through which a battery operated pump would infuse the Desferal. More recently, he switched to Exjade which is taken orally and comes in a tablet that dissolves in water. However, this medicine had many uncomfortable side effects for Kevin primarily involving nausea, stomach pain and intestinal problems. (For more info on DBA and treatment, click here)

Due to improper chelation, Kevin passed away from iron overload on July 26, 2010, just 5 days after his 29th birthday.

While Kevin’s blood disease was a part of his life from birth, he did not let it define him. Kevin enjoyed sports, such as baseball, golf, and bowling. Kevin was an avid music fan, often explaining his passion with a wry grin, “I would consider myself a music aficionado, not a snob.” His self-effacing humor, unique outlook, and concern for others quickly drew all around him into natural friendships.

Dedicated to education, Kevin received a degree in radio broadcasting from the Art Institute in Boston and was working on a civil engineering degree at Wentworth Institute of Technology. He was also an animal lover, adopting a Boston Terrier Pug, named Remy, who is now cared for by Kevin’s brother, Will. He even confessed, “In general, I care more about animals than people.”

However, when looking at Kevin’s life, his greatest happiness laid in his family. Nothing was more important to him than strengthening family ties. He loved to spend time with close family members and longed to connect with those who he was not as close.

Help us keep Kevin’s wonderful memory alive! Attend events, or donate to our Foundation, or become part of our team.
